In 1993 Edith Schippers worked as personal assistant to Dick Dees, a member of the House of Representatives for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). From 1994 to 1997 she was a policy officer for the VVD parliamentary party in the field of health, welfare and sport.

Ms Schippers joined the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers VNO-NCW in 1997, where she worked as secretary for health and the labour market until 2001 and secretary for spatial planning until 2003.

On 3 June 2003, Edith Schippers became a member of the House of Representatives for the VVD. She was the party’s spokesperson on health and development cooperation. From March 2006 she was also deputy leader of the parliamentary party. From June 2009 to September 2010 she was a member of the parliamentary committee investigating the financial system.

On 14 October 2010 Ms Schippers was appointed Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Rutte-Verhagen government.

On 5 November 2012 Edith Schippers was appointed Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Rutte-Asscher government.
